As we get close to the warm weather, I am beginning to listen to Carolina Shag Music on XM Radio.  I did a Birthday Party a few years back where the Birthday Girl wanted me to play ”Summertime’s Calling Me” by a group by the name of The Catalinas.  They were one of those Carolina bands that performed in the clubs all along the Carolina Beaches.  The Carolina Shag is a style of dance, and I have to tell you, there are lots of songs done by artists who are not famous nationally, but have quite the following in the Carolinas.  I have over 400 songs in my Carolina Shag Playlist, some of which were Top 40 charted hits.  I have created a playlist with some of my favorite Carolina Shag songs that I have on my Playlist tab on my website.  It makes me want to be a DJ in some of the clubs in Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head.

Well, it has been one “hell of a ride” since my gig on March 14, 2020.  I actually did 4 outside weddings from August through October 2020 and they went well, masks and all (well not a lot of masks after the guests had a few cocktails).  But then all of my early 2021 gigs were cancelled until I did 3 outside Elementary School parties in May and June.  They were great.  I am raring and ready to go and do have a number of weddings, trade shows, homecomings and a prom scheduled for the fall.  So, if you are thinking of having a party (I think everyone needs a party after all this nonsense), please contact me.  I may even offer a Pandemic discount.

On March 14, 2020, I did a 70^th Birthday Party at Timothy’s in Lionville for Christine Brickley.  A couple days later, Governor Wolf closed down all restaurants and bars.  Luckily all participants did not get the Corona Virus.  We danced and partied like crazy.

Every year, my DJ buddy, Joe Griffith, and I go to the DJ Expo in Atlantic City.  It is a time to hang out and have fun and check out the latest in DJ Equipment and Lights.  Plus, we always get some free T-shirts and some 10 day trials of New Music.  We did it this year on August 13, 2019 and did not spend any money.  But we did get some ideas for lighting and got some questions answered by some product experts who were at the show.

I have been a Mobile DJ since 2000 and have done many, many events. The other evening, I did a wedding and one older gentleman came up to me and asked me how I keep up with today’s music as well as the stuff that the parents and grandparents would also want to hear and dance to. It got me to thinking. Too many of the young DJs you can hire do not really have the knowledge of which older songs (both upbeat and slow) to play for both the older crowd and the younger crowd.

This gentleman’s comment made me realize that a Bride and Groom might want to consider a DJ who truly knows the music of today as well as the oldies from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

I am just that DJ. I grew up with the music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, but I also am a big, big fan of much of today’s music. I follow it, subscribe to a DJ Pool service that provides me with the latest Pop Songs and I follow the current Billboard charts the same as I did in the 80s and 90s. I also have a photographic memory when it comes to music and I am what is referred to as a Musicologist.

At the same Wedding, another gentleman came up to me to request some songs and candidly said to me “I can tell this is not your first rodeo!!” This was after I had done the Bridal Party introductions and the entire room was into it with applause, laughter and cheering. It set the tone for the rest of the evening.
